Closed Loop Micromachined Inertial Sensors with Higher Order Σ∆-Modulators

چکیده
Micromachined inertial sensors are often incorporated in closed loop force feedback structures; a particularly advantageous approach is based upon the inclusion of the sensing element in a sigma-delta modulator (Σ∆M) type control structure. The order of the Σ∆M, and hence the noise shaping properties, is usually limited by the dynamics of the mechanical sensing element and may be insufficient for high performance applications. This paper presents a novel approach suggesting the use of a sigma-delta modulator with an order higher than the mechanical sensing element. This is achieved by a modified cascaded (or MASH) Σ∆M loop architecture. A model of the electromechanical MASH is presented and the quantisation noise analysis is derived. Simulation results indicate nearly 30 dB increase in signal to quantisation noise ratio.

Simulation of Micromachined Inertial Sensors with Higher-Order Single Loop Sigma-Delta Modulators
Micromachined capacitive inertial sensors incorporated in sigma-delta force-feedback loops have been proven to improve linearity, dynamic range and bandwidth, and also provide a direct digital output. Previous work mainly focused on using only the sensing element to form a 2order single loop sigma-delta modulator ( M ). Therefore, the advantages of higher-order (4-order and 5-order) single loop...

Sigma-delta interfaces are attractive for micromachined inertial sensors since they combine the benefits of feedback with analogto-digital conversion at a relatively modest circuit cost [1,2]. In present implementations, however, the Σ∆ feedback carries a significant noise penalty of as much as 20dB over open-loop designs [3]. An analysis of the problem is performed and a solution employing add...

The present approaches on predicting stability of Delta-Sigma (Δ-Σ) modulators are mostly confined to DC inputs. This poses limitations as practical applications of Δ-Σ modulators involve a wide range of signals other than DC such as multiple sinusoidal inputs for speech modeling. In this paper, a quasi-linear model for Δ-Σ modulators with nonlinear feedback control analysis is presented that a...
